For the same reason that George Bush thinks Africa is a country. For the same reason that that the math you are doing now in school is a four-year retrograde experience. It started with the Civil Rights movement strangely enough, more particularly with the way politicians mandated dealing with the poor education many blacks received in this country for many many years. Part of the solution was to reduce requirements to the lowest common denominator, so that every child that performed at even the minimal level would advance through the system.
That made the statistics appear to show that they had been given some wondrous inoculation of learning that made up for past deficiencies, but this broken promise cheated the students and in many cases set them up for worse experiences later in life.
Your teacher is likely a product of the post-dilution American educational systems. He/she assumed that being a black transfer student, you would be behind the curve.

This is a classic case of "thanks a lot Hollywood and the media". It is certainly unfair that black people are coined as "stupider" then any other race, but at the same time, you need to take a look at what the rest of the world is shown on a daily basis, and also at what African American men and women show us as well! What I mean by this is....whenever I turn on the tv, this is what I see: Ghetto, slums, gang wars, drive by shootings, black people hauled off in cuffs, using rap slang words, dropping out of school, having tons of babies that they cannot support, and so on and so forth. This is what we are seeing, and thus beleiving. Unfair? Absolutely! But I also think that some of the onus should be placed on the black community as well, as they promote these things and make it look "cool", when in reality, it characterizes all black people and makes them look absolutely ridiculous, thus forming this basically universal opinion and perspective. We can and should all be working together to get rid of this racial segregation and opinion, but it starts with their own people making a solid effort to change and create a respectable image for themselves.

color has nothing to do with intelligence. i have seen some smart black people and i have seen some dumb ones just the same with any other race of people. As for why the teacher asked you that she probably thought you would be too shy to get along in her class.

Perhaps she wasn't sure what level you are on. I wouldn't automatically assume it's because of race or nationality. Different parts of the world operate differently. She really has no way of knowing what you were doing in school there.

Americans don't know much about the outside world, so don't even bother. They once asked a friend of mine if they had electricity and cars in Germany.

No, your teacher was just uninformed....she would have asked the same thing whether you came from Kentucky or Africa.

alot of people make this mistake. they just fail to consider that you are thinking in at least two languages. they also fail to consider that you need a couple of extra second to translate and that some things are lost in translation. just be secure in knowing that you are smart and probably smarter than most of us.

because we're not
we're too fixated on consumerism, there's not enough perfectionists, or tidy people or men that stay with their families, we don't understand how to do the right, progressive kind of hard work. we work hard at the wrong jobs. we are awful with proactiveness, we backstab copiously
