My dad asked me but i didnt know cuz im not a plant person so i figured id asked someone else and hope someone could help.

It requires 6 weeks of long nights, uninterrupted. Any light intrusion will cancel it out. It is very hard to do at home. You must put it in a closet at the same time every day. Take it out 16 hours later. You must do this every day. Thr closet must have no light leaks. This is why the nurseries sell so many each year.

You have to put the plant in a dark place for several days

Not sure exactly, but I know that it involves keeping them in complete darkness for a set period of time. This is usually done in October or November in preparation for Christmas time.
