Contiguous files just means they're not all over the place on your hard disk. Defragmenting makes your files continguous (all in one place) and speeds up your computer's access times to those files. But when you're dealing with nanoseconds, it's not a huge noticeable difference. By all means defrag and go do something eles while it's defragging. Just don't expect a lot of notiecable results. One good thing about defragging, it identifies bad sectors on your drive and repairs files that have no pointer to the next bit of data in that file, and gives you the option of deleting them altogether. Defrag about once every 3 months if you like. It can't hurt.

Trying to make this understandable...

Contiguous files are what you want to have on your hard drive for peak performance. These files are stored on the drive without using extra "free" space and easier to read since the drive head does not have to dance around the entire disk.

Fragmented files are broken bits of files that are stored in many areas of the drive. If you DE-FRAGMENT your drive using the tool provided in XP, most of your files will turn into Contiguous files, which will improve disk performance.

Contiguous files or sections of files are files or sections of files that are located right next to each other on a hard disk. Usually, since they're already at the right location, your disk defragmenter will not touch these files but not always. The purpose of defragmenting your disk is to get each section of each file right next to each other so that when the read head of the disk reads a particular area, it can read the file in a single access or in the least amount of access to the disk. In computerese, disk access takes time and is expensive so if you can reduce this, you're at an advantage.

The contiguous files are the 'healthiest' files. Each contiguous file is stored as one unit in one physical location each on the hard disk or other storage medium.

Fragmented files are ones where each file is stored at various locations on the storage device. This is inefficient.

Disk fragmenter searches for fragments of a record, places those fragments multi functional place on the hard disk. It hastens record get right of entry to. you will no longer be conscious a distinction once you're searching for archives. that's recommended to try this approximately as quickly as a month, a minimum of. in case you utilize the pc on a daily basis, then as quickly as each and every 2 weeks is reliable.

These are files that must be stored in adjacent blocks/clusters on the disk drive.
