Well, if this guy only has 'book-knowledge' in his head, No.
But if he has an 'intelligent' character/ personality, knows how to choose his words wisely and keeps you guessing at what he is going to say next; And you look at him and you think "my goodness, this guy is like a bottomless well; he has so much wisdom." That's HOT!! That makes guys very attractive. Even if he is not that good looking.

Intelligent with average looks is fine with me. I need someone who can form complete sentences and knows what's going on in the world.

Intelligent but unattractive, definitely. Looks only go so far and only last so long.
PS: I suspect more men will answer, "Looks" and more women will answer, "Intelligence". Fact of life, unfortunately.

have a date once with a terrific looking guy - but the topics of conversation was very limited - i was bored to sleep. couldnt help glancing at my watch every now and then.

I would not date either. I feel that physical attraction is necessary, as is similar interests and intelligence. A dumb man would bore me, and a facially deformed person would disgust me.
