If there was a vote, I think New Brunswick voters would have voted for joining confederation, at the time most of the population were English Immigrants and United Empire Loyalists, the last thing they would want is run the danger of being annexed by the United States. The United States position at the time was called "The Monroe Doctrine" meaning the United States should have all of North America. Also the United States fought an Monroe Doctrine war against Mexico during the early 1800s and conquered Mexico and took it's capital, Mexico City. In the so-called peace treaty, the United States took a large part of Mexico, now the States of Texas, New Mexico and California and made them part of the United States. This war would have been fresh in voters minds just as the wars in Iraq and Afganistan are fresh in our minds today.

Probably not. They seemed to be doing just fine as they were and getting along with their neighbors (the Americans). In the late 1800 there was a problem with Irish immigrants during the potato famine. But other than that they got along just fine.
