The value is only $150. Does Paypal provide any protection in this scenario? If I ought to use an escrow service, can you suggest one? How and when will I know that the transfer of the domain has occurred and that I haven't been swindled?

Bah, those evil domain squatters.

Thanks for any help ;)

I think you already answered your own question... you don't trust them!

I wouldn't buy anything - no matter the price - from anyone I didn't trust!

Your gut is telling you that person is not going to take a hit on anything, especially if they don't know you - therefore, I would say NO!

DON'T BUY FROM SOMEONE YOU DON'T TRUST.. If it is a domain name that 'you just have to have'.. that is your choice.. if you want more advice email me privately, I will send you to someone that will not rip you off and will get you set up for what a domain name costs.. you will know when you get it there is a site that when you type in the domain name it tells the owners name.

Never support domain squatters!

Just use your credit card via paypal or whatever you can always do a chargeback. I would do a chargeback anyway for 150 for something that costs 3.00

do a /whois

lol, make sure that the domain name is registered to the same person that you are paying to, don't pay via paypal(cuz the name could be spoofed).

Domain for $150, paypal... looks like a scam

When it comes to paypal there is no protection, visit www.paypalsucks.com
