It's their own voice - singing... I want to say it is because the background music is so loud they can't hear if they are on pitch or not....
however, I really think it is just because most of them are REALLY VEIN and love the sound of their own voice - LITERALLY!

If the singer has headphones on while they are onstage they are gitting queues from the stage director on where to be and whats coming up. The stage is a dangerous place if your not where your suppose to be, and even more dangerous if you don't know where your going. Some singers will where ear plugs, which might be confused as earphones, this is so they aren't deffend by the sound around them, some also use this to stay on pitch, but most don't need this.

It's their background music but it also helps them hear their own voice better.

They hear themselves to make sure their voice is coming out with the real tone. Have you seen those, trying to cover one ear while practicing? Is the exact same thing.

It's not earphones, just earplugs so they can hear their vocalization better, and stay on key. Try it, just press on your ear and see how different your voice sounds !

It's the mixed down sound of the band backing them up.
