Good question!
Obviously from their socks but the back stories can be found at the links I provided. The Red Sox one is quite wild.
White Stockings as you can read was the Cubs' original nickname so the White Sox sort of revived the name.

Nickname:
Took it's name from the Boston Red Stockings the original name of the Boston Braves (the first professional ballclub in Boston).
A: The current Chicago White Sox are actually named after their old crosstown rivals from the National League, the Chicago White Stockings (now the Cubs). The White Stockings, a successful early franchise, were so named because of the long white stockings they played in. Many of those early clubs, including the Hartford Dark Blues, St. Louis Brown Stockings, Cincinnati Red Stockings, and Providence Grays, took their names from their clothing. Sox owner Charlie Comiskey supposedly shortened the team name in order to make it easier to fit into newspaper headlines.

The Boston Red Sox were originall called the Boston Red Stockings, to tey to confuse people...(The Nation League team that eventually became the Braves were also called the Red Stockings) The National League Team sued the American League Team and then the owner shortened the name.
similar incidents hapened in Chicago and St. Louis.

when baseball first started, teams were divided by the colors of their socks.....so it just stuck to their team name for these two teams
