The complete collapse of honor, decency and ethics in the society around you. If, from the president on down, to religious leaders and churches, business leaders and the corporate pillaging, down to the local level, dare I say even here on yahoo answers, all we hear about are rats abandoning the social contract, what is to inspire an otherwise honest student to remain honest?

Well, when you have studied and studied and studied for something, and you still aren't getting the test questions right, you are tempted to look at other people's answers. After all, you spent all those hours studying, and is it right for you to do poorly?
And if there is too much homework and other things that the student has to worry about, they might plagiarize.

honesty barely has to do anything with cheating/plagarizing. mostly it has to deal with stress, laziness and pressure to achieve. it's very tempting to do it when you want an A in a hard class.
