There are advantages and disadvantages to uniforms.

Pros:
1. They level the playing field for all students. No one needs feel fashionably inadequate. All can be judged (perhaps a bad choice of words; but, devil's advocate or not, its the reality) based on who they are rather than what they're wearing.

2. for faculty--no concern over the appropriateness of the fashion choices of the student body.

3. Have an err of prestige about them.

4. Makes choosing what to wear easier in the morning.

Cons:

1. Sometimes creates a financial burden on lower income families to come up with money for specific school clothes and meet school requirements.

2. Reduces the student body's ability to express individuality with their fashion choices.

As for my personal opinion of them, I have mixed feelings. I like the psychological advantages; but, myself, would be one of those parents who would be hard pressed to come up with the extra funds for the uniform.

I never had to wear a uniform to school, but there are benefits to wearing a uniform. But I have also heard of students who felt that uniforms were stifling and did not allow them to be themselves.

A good solution, if your school were to require uniforms would be allow a dress down friday or something of that nature.

In my daughters school uniforms are optional. some people wear them some people don't. I like the uniforms because you always know what you are going to wear. But my child doesn't wear them because they don't really look good on her. she is a bit overweight and loose clothes make her look better. Well that is my opinion on that. Wish you all mak the right decision.

What is the question?
I like the idea of uniforms because it takes away any decisions.
Why is this discussed in history class?

Uniforms are good and bad for all the reasons already cited. However, I've seen kids in uniforms who modified and adapted the outfits to their own tastes, so the individuality is still there.

It would make mornings so much easier because you don't have to figure out what to wear. It also doesn't allow for self expression. It also makes everyone equal (based on the fact that nobody can be judged on whether or not their family can afford those designer clothes)

I think uniforms in school are good. You don't waste time every morning thinking, "What should I wear today?" and you won't waste time looking and commenting on what your peers are wearing.

I see more pros than cons. Benefits are in the cost of clothes, no gross disparities between those kids who have, and those who don't, fewer gross dress code violations (butt showing, over sized clothing, gang colors, fat midriff showing, cleavage, etc.), and kids will always know whats "in" for the day.
