the guitar is an easy instrument to play, but it is a difficult instrument to master.
that is to say, if you want to learn a few chords, some strumming, and enough so that you can play along with the average rock'n'roll song on the radio, it's not all that tough.
but to get to be a real master of the instrument takes years of hard work.
to start with, what you need is a basic chord book, some strumming and/or picking instruction, you can work on some basic blues or pentatonic scales, and that will keep your hands full for some time. there are lots and lots of good resources out there, both in books and on the internet. go into your local store and choose one that looks like it's suited to your interests.
I hope you have a lot of fun. making music is oing to give you years of pleasure. good luck!!

I tried to teach a friend guitar once and after about 15 minutes his fingers hurt so much he decided he really didn't want to learn. So it might be good to play around with one at a guitar store first to make sure it's something you want to put the effort into.

I've always thought it was worth the pain and after a little while your fingers get calluses on the tips and it doesn't hurt anymore.
