why do singers loose there ascent when singing?

Singing is like talking, you learn by imitating those around you.
Therefore UK singers who sing with an American accent, listen to and like that kind of song.
Bands like The Proclaimers or The Pogues however probably learnt on the local pub circuit, and like the old folk stuff.

In the USA we notice that some singers talk with an accent, but sing normally partly because the singer tries to approximate an American accent. Men at Work, U2, Pink Floyd, even AC/DC have thick native accents, but sing neutrally (to us, anyway). A good counter-example is the Scottish duo The Proclaimers. They just can't shake the highland accent.

Not all singers do - look at the proclaimers. But if I were to try to do a country-and-western song I'd put an a country-and-western accent. Or try to.

obviously when one speaks the vocal cords are in a different position than when one sings. singing is quite artificial compared to speaking.

moreover, when one is speaking one is to some extent guided by the feedback one gets from hearing oneself - the same does not obtain during singing, in which one is reacting to the externalities - orchestra, if there - as well as internal mechanisms (remembering what note and vocal sounds to sing next)
