First check antifreeze level. If it's low then you need to do a pressure test and see where your coolant is going. It could be a hose leak, a radiator leak, loose radiator cap, water pump, heater core, intake gasket leaking. Fix any leaks you may find.
If the coolant level is okay, change your thermostat. Make sure you don't put it in the wrong way, it can cause major engine damage.
If it is only getting hot when going uphill, or while stopped and then cools off again when you start going check to make sure your fans are operating properly and that the radiator isn't restricted outside or gunked up inside.
If the gauge is going up and down fast, then you are vapor locked and need to get that trapped air out. Some but not all engines have a bleeder valve on them that you can open while filling the radiator that lets the air escape.
Last but not least, sometimes the gauge will say you are overheating when you actually aren't due to a malfunctioning coolant temp sensor.
Hope that helps some.

Check the coolant to make sure you have a sufficient amount. If you do have the right amount of coolant then go to some place like pep boys and have them check your anti-freeze. It is important that the right combination of water and anti-freeze be in your car.

The easiest way to check for coolant loss is look under the car for wet spots. Then raise the hood and look at the little plastic jug marked coolant if you can't see liquid you are low and at that point add water to bring the liquid level up to the fill line.

The quickest & simplest method is to check the radiator and add coolant if necesary. If it's full, check the quality of the coolant and see if it needs to be flushed out & replaced. If that doesn't do it, you may need a new radiator or water pump.

Say Eddie, you chum could be perfect, yet you could no longer low value the quicker diagnostic, the cooling gadget will bypass by a chain of heating up and cooling down cycles, for the duration of warmth up the air could make it to the coolant reservoir on quiet down coolant would be siphoned decrease back into the radiatior and cooling gadget, after a number of those cycles the reservoir coolant could desire to alter into empty and suck air if left empty beginning the trapped air cycle. propose you have the air purged by skill of a powerful save and save tabs on the reservoir, if the priority persists you could desire to have an inner leak or possibly the heater center is leaking. reliable success

make sure it has coolant. i bet it is the thermostat stuck closed, which wont let coolant flow. did you put a new body kit on and block air flow through radiator. if loosing coolant see where leak is. no leak the radiator cap isn't working to let coolant back into system.

first...check the coolant. second check the thermostat. If them are both good and you are not losing coolant...exhaust...specifically the catylytic converter. this can cause engine over heating and loss of power.
