I don't get the change his mind thing.
After saving luke from the cold and returning to the base the base was under orders to strike everything and meat up with the rebel fleet. Luke had o got to Dantooine to meet up with Yoda for training. Han and Chewy were always in this just for the money. There is a whole scene with Leia about that fact. Had Solo paid the bounty like he wanted to instead of following Leia and taking her to the City in the Clouds mining planet he probably would have been held hostage or killed by Vader after he filled his use as bait to lure Luke into a trap. Leia is the reason he doesn't pay back the money on time. He was going to do it all along.

Bounty hunters that he ran into on another planet, plus the fact that he had the money in hand with which to pay the debt.
