Empathy means the capacity to recognize with a person or object or ability of feeling. For instance if a person is suffering, one has to identify this. Sympathy means sharing the feelings of others or expression of grief for others loss. Empathy is just feeling but sympathy is expression.

None in reality, but in language 'sympathy' is having traveled the same path or experiencing of the same kind, empathy is identifying the emotion a person is presenting symptomatically. Empty or shallow sympathy is having the same experience without the emotional content.

Empathy and sympathy are very close and are sometimes used as synonyms. The easiest way to separate them is to remember that empathy is about feelings whilst sympathy is about actions. Thus you may empathize with another person and then act on this by telling them how sorry or happy you feel for them.

Empathy is an understanding, usually born of going through a similar experience or situation to the person you are thinking about. sympathy is simply feeling sorry for a person, not necessarily understanding what they are going through.

. Sympathy is expressing sorrow to some other person even although you may not personally have suffered or felt what that person is feeling. For example: Your friends`husband has died, you feel sad for her, but your husband is still alive, so you do not really know how she is feeling. Empathy is the ability to understand how someone else is feeling because you have been in a similar situation yourself. Example; you are a widow, your friends`husband dies, you know the feeling, it comes from inside ,from your heart or soul perhaps. You have experienced it..

Empathy is understanding someone's emotion based on the fact that you too are a human being and we are all one. Sympathy is feeling sorry for someone, but not being able to put yourself in their shoes because you are somehow detached and not feeling as one with them in their humanity.

Sympathy is feeling the same way the other feels about something.
It is quite possible to have sympathy without really understandin what is hapening.
Empathy is clearly understanding how the other feels. It is quite possible to understand another's feelings without feeling the same way. It is more objective than sympathy.
