Good point. Perhaps someone should point out to them how many wars throughout history have been fought based on religious intolerance or differences--almost all, give or take a few over power, resources, &/ or territory. They should look at how much evil mankind has done in the name of its God(s)/ Godess(es)!!!!! I'd say Science is about as benign as it gets. Also, these religous fanatics are hippocrates. They claim a dedication to the truth. However, in reality, they fear the truth. If their religous beliefs were indeed the truth, they could stand up against any and all scrutiny without injury. If they cant, it's because they are false. There is nothing lost in shedding belief in a falacy. "The TRUTH will set you FREE!!"

The current war being waged against science by religious fundamentalists or "loonies" as you call them, is nothing new. Where they use all manner of justification to insist that debunking eternal religious "truths" removes God from our lives, the reality is that a traditionally defined God as some magical, all powerful and benevolent sky daddy, simply does not work in a modern era. Considering this reality is beyond some people's reasoning, or lack thereof. It then becomes a proactive effort at reconciliation between a fantasy world as constructed by religious belief and the real world as subjected to the scientific method. Anyone who does not support some of the ridiculous assertions as found in antiquated religious doctrine, is deemed the enemy of religious belief and therefore of the fundamentalist believer's God. Scientists in this light are merely the bearers of bad news to those who adamantly do not want to hear it.
