Not a lot, but it does eat a lot of RAM. Plus, the more RAM you put in, the more RAM messenger eats up. However it is nothing that will signifantly hamper performance, although I would suggest you close it before you play any games.

No more so than any other program. If you do not leave it on auto-on, it will not use your CPU until you start the messenger.

Using a screensaver full of graphics will severely slow your computer. It runs in the background and uses a lot of memory.

Also, having a lot of programs in startup slows your PC. Load only those programs you want to work with. You will see a big difference.

If you have not done any housecleaning for a while, that will slow your PC. Periodically and regularly, run a disk cleanup, scandisk, and a defrag.

Depends on the computer. It seems to use around 10-20mb of RAM, so if your system is low on memory its performace may suffer when messenger is open. If it does, its a sure sign that its time to upgrade your system.
