You cannot get them back from your hard drive on the laptop. Did you have copies on a PC, on the web? On disc? If not, they are gone. Always back-up your data. I learned the hard way too.
Only deleted files can be recovered. You cannot recover from formatting a hard drive.

If you format your computer and have not backed up the desired information it is lost forever. There is no way to unformat a computer unless you're running on a Windows 95 or older.
