The first thing to check is that the volume on your speakers is turned up, and that they have power (if required). Next, open Control Panel and click Sounds and Audio Devices. Make sure the Device Volume setting is not on minimum, and that the Mute checkbox is unchecked.
If they still dont work, open System, click the Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Make sure your sound card shows up under Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Try reinstalling your sound card drivers.

Check these things:
Speakers plugged into the electric outlet - sometimes things happen and they get unplugged
Speaker volume control on the speakers is turned up enough.
Volume control on the task bar at the right, when you open the control, is it muted? Sometimes other users mute it.
Where the speakers are plugged into the computer's audio port, does jiggling the plug cause the sound to intermittently happen? Sometimes the sound card solution gets damaged from accidents when moving the case or the plug gets too unplugged and you don't notice.
Hold down the windows key and push the pause/break key and navigate to Hardware, then Device manager and see if your sound card is working.

Restart your computer. Check for any muted sound options. If that doesn't work, trace your speakers cords back to their inputs and the power cable back to wherever it's plugged into. Take them all out and plug them back in exactly as they were. If that doesn't work, your speakers may have a loose connection or are just fried. Also, make sure your audio card isn't chipped broken or loose(if it's not integrated).

Try double clicking the speaker icon in your system tray (bottom right side of your screen, next to the clock)
If you can't find the speaker icon, hold down the windows button and push "r". Then, type sndvol32.
Then check to see if mute is selected, and make sure all of the sliders are up. Also, check your speaker plug, to make sure it is plugged in the right hole (usually the green colored one... but some pc audio jacks aren't colored). Make sure your speakers are plugged in and turned up as well. Try again :)

Well, it isn't fairly new, it is from 1999 or something. You drivers are bad. Just uninstall them and reinstall them it will all be good.
