The obvious answer is that England isn't sooo much better than Scotland, so your first question is irrelevant.
In answer to your second question, I don't find this to be true. Most people from England that I know self-identify as English and not British. Personally I identify as British, because my Mum is Scottish and my Dad is English, but I think I'd identify as British anyway - it's what's on my passport and every part of the United Kingdom would be worse off if they had to exist as independent nations.

English and proud. I used to say British and fly the Union Flag. But with the 'others' saying Scottish, Welsh, Irish I felt the need to be 'English' and fly the English Flag'
Good on John boy for being honest, I feel a little ashamed after reading your answer.

People from Scotland call themselves "Scots," not Scottish or Scotch. England is a country within the British Isles. Hence, they are Brits.
England wanted to take over the land in Scotland, to annex it as part of the vast British Empire.

It's land isn't it? Unless it's contaminated by nuclear fallout who wouldn't want to gain a country's worth of land?
The English interchangeably call themselves English or British. The difference is in the fact that the English, in my opinion, care less about having a separate national identity; whereas the Scots make a display of cultural independence to fight against the worldwide ignorance that England equals Britain. The English don't need to do this because they're actually the beneficiaries of this ignorance. Hence they don't care whether they're seen as British or English. That's my theory anyway.
Thumbs down guys: too many big words for you? I can dumb it down if you like.

We don't call our selfs, we call ourselves.
I'm English and whenever discussing nationality with my friends we always choose the country of our birth rather than the kingdom of birth. I am a part of the UK of GB, but I am English primarily.

I grew up with this extremely unsightly anti-English recommendations-set (i'm Scots-Irish), so when I moved to England, i became into fairly anxious that this hatred would have been mutual. i'm very overjoyed to declare that, for the time of my time south of the border, i became into welcomed with open hands and at recent absorbed into the community, and my nationality became into surely not an argument. i've got stumbled on that this hostility in the direction of the English is very everyday interior the decrease classes (to which I belong) and fantastically the uneducated. it form of feels unusual that many Scots are nonetheless occurring concerning to the way the English taken care of us centuries in the past, whilst, as Nicola H suggested, it became right into a Scottish King (James VI of Scotland/ James I of great Britain) who declared that Scoland belonged to Britain interior the 1st place. Scotland benefitted a great deal as area of great Britain, fantastically in the process the 'Golden Age' of the British Empire. We made a fortune out of foreign places commerce, fantastically slavery (our enslavement by potential of England is a dreadful element... Now we could teach our team spirit with those Africans by potential of advertising them off for a hefty earnings - and each physique's a winner!). at recent, I do think of it rather is accessible that Scotland would desire to become self reliant: North Sea oil has delivered in a great style of money in previous years. even nonetheless, as all of us understand, the oil is working out, and could not final continually. it rather is rather stressful that we pay an identical taxes as human beings interior the South-East of britain, yet fairly are not getting comparable centers (our roads, working example, are horrendous in assessment...). yet it rather is not anti-English, in all likelihood many human beings interior the North or West of britain, and in Wales, sense an identical. And to respond to yet another one among your splendidly insightful and grownup questions, of course we could invade England - there would basically be 5 million persons, whilst in comparison with 50 million of them, yet with our staggering Scottish weight-help plan (enable's be patriotic), we are all a minimum of 10 situations the dimensions besides, which, arithmetically, makes a honest combat.
