Easy.

The answer is 7. If the teacher places 4 of the 7 on one bench there are 3 remaining. If the teacher places 5 of the 7 on the bench there are only 2 remaining.

Ok I'm not sure if this is right but her it goes. Im in calculas 3 so if I get this wrong tell your teacher her questions are too hard. The smallest number you can have is 7. Here is why. Pretend you only have 1 row of seats. If you have 7 students and you put 4 on the one row of seats, you have 3 remaining. If you you have 7 students and you put 5 on that one row of seats you have 2 remaining. Hope this helps!!!1

23 students. let's assume there are 5 benches, if the teacher were to seat 4 children each, all but three will not be seated (4x5=20, 23-20=3 students left over). if the teacher were to seat 5 children in each bench, two seats will be free (5x5=25, 25-23=2 seats left over).

We know there are 5+2, or 10+2, or 15+2, etc.
Lets try 5+2, i.e. 7. Yep, 4 on a bench, 3 left over.

4 children on each bench leaves three over

5 children on each bench leaves two over

It seems simple to me: 4+3=5+2

The smallest number of kids is 7.
