Globalisation, in theory is a beautiful phenomenon. Each country producing what it is best at, consumers getting the lowest prices, the whole globe enjoying the benefits.

In practice globalisation is a euphemism for neo-colonialism. How that happens is simple: poorer countries are told to open up to foreign goods, which is not a bad thing. But there is no reciprocity. What poorer countries are good at producing is agricultural produce. What the richer countries defend is their agricultural sector. There are HUGE subsidies that keep farmers from bankruptcy in the USA and Europe. This keeps the cost of locally produced agricultural products artoficially low. Furthermore, there are other barriers to foreign produce. One of the most ridiculous I read about is a ban on bananas if the curvature of the banana is not right.

Smaller nations open up their economies, MNCs go in and establish a very firm footing. There will be no local firms competing; anyone is nipped in the bud. On the other hand, the agricultural sector is hindered from exporting to the rich countries. The poor countries are being squeezed on both sides.

The fact is, today's rich countries have prospered behind tariffs and other protectionist measures, even using armed forced to force other countries to buy their products http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Perry_(naval_officer)

It is the same story for pollution; for how many years have today's developed nations polluted the atmosphere, starting with coal powered factories? Now they want to stop quickly industrialising nations from doing the same.

'Do as I say, not as I do'.

The main question is, how long will this system last.

There was a brief window of time without much colonialism, after the decline of overt control, before the advent of this version of globalisation.

How long before there are violent reactions? Have they started already? How long before this plunder of foreign resources, be it spices, minerals, oil, water... comes to an end?

The longer is continues, the higher the chances of destruction on a truly global scale.

It will if it results in our protectionist sides rearing their ugly heads and closing our borders (trade-wise). China was the world's strongest economy took a protectionist stand a few centuries ago. Britain came along and wanted to trade with them, China said "we don't need any of your goods". Britain soon overtook China as the world's superpower. China is only now catching up now that it embraced (and was embraced by) the free market world.

Trade facilitates economic and technological growth. Despite what others say, free trade has actually made America richer. Unfortunately, those at the bottom (i.e. manufacturing) with little to no skills that are marketable in this new economic order get left behind. With the cost of doing business so much higher here than in other areas that we trade freely with, the only areas we can compete in are service and knowledge based.

A lot of very smart and convincing people are sounding the protectionist alarms. I think perhaps they're right when it comes to border security, but when they start talking about free trade I disagree with them. Pat Buchanan, for example, makes a lot of sense sometimes and he's a very smart guy. He's one of the few prominent political pundits out there who I think is honest in what he's doing. I think he's brilliant. I just don't think he's 100% right.

Hopefully not. There just needs to be regulations. A world economy helps all involved in it...third world countries, etc. It provides work, which provides a life for those who would be struggling to survive otherwise. The problem happens when companies are allowed to move their companies overseas, make the goods cheaper, and then import them back to the US, without a penalty. I'm all for capitalization, and I can see why companies go for cheap labor..no unions, etc...but we cannot lose all of the manufacturing jobs in this country, that is just plain ridiculous.
I think that globalization is a great thing...as long as the whole "globe" is involved...

uncertain. It in all probability reason greater wars. If we've a unified one international government, we are going to easily have greater areas attempting to attain their very own sovereignty. in simple terms like we've seen ensue for the period of time. you have a one international government, a undeniable area needs it accomplished this sort, the leaders of the OWG says no, conflict breaks out, the seperatists desire to secede and function their very own governance. And the technique repeats back and back back, until the single international government will become a fractured pile of crap. in simple terms seem at how ineffective and bureaucratic the U.N. is. they're basically the trial version of a one international government.
