Here's an idea that gets away from clothes and is really simple sewing. Make kites from nylon taffeta. There are patterns on the net or look around for a kite book. You can join panels of different colours or go for applique if you are confident enough.

You will need dowel for sticks, cloth tape, metal eyelets a few key rings and the best inexpensive string is builder's line which is braided. The Eddy kite is simple to make, needs no tail and is a good flier. Make them at least a yard across, bigger kites fly better than little kites and are less sensitive to small errors in cutting and sewing.

Good cloth kites last for years and make fine personal gifts for children. One sewing teacher said she could make such kites in half an hour, even with a fairly elaborate pattern of panels.

First, what do u want to do. Decorate, wear? Try making pillows for a sofa or bed. Then maybe increase and try a simple skirt. Shirts are a little harder because of sleeves and button holes. Try a scarf, blankets. As u get more confident then attempt the shirt and blouses, then pants etc. If u need lessons, try a Sewing place, most give lessons on your machine so u know all what u can do with it.

Why don't you make some different kinds of aprons? The catalogs have some very unique ones and they are expensive but look simple. The pattern books have some of the retro patterns. You might sell some locally or give them as gifts if you don't want to sell them. Another idea is bibs for adults...They are good gifts for adults who need them and gag gifts for those who don't. Napkins in pretty prints and holiday prints are also popular.

Table linens are easy and fun, and you can save a huge amount of money. Curtains, too. You can also make decorative cushions for a sofa or bed, and stuff them with purchased pillow forms.

tank tops and skirts are easiest
shorts are easy depending how complicated you make them (like with or without pockets, etc.) and what material you make it out of. i made my daughter a pair of pajama shorts out of t-shirt cotton and it was pretty easy. go for it and good luck!
also if you like knitting really easy is making a scarf or a hat or mittens. make them matching and then after you get the hang of it make a cute matching sweater to complete the outfit!
