The question as old as time. I was offered a position in NYC that starts on Monday. I am currently in NC at the moment. If I take the job I will not be giving my current employer any notice. The best I could do is slip a letter of resignation under his office door. He left too early today before I decided to accept the new position. What do you think I should do? I already have the job and a place to stay up there so thats not a factor. Its just a matter of accepting it and giving my boss a zero day notice that I'm leaving is what I'm pondering over.

I left out one minor detail. I was offered the position about 2 weeks ago but I couldn't decide whether I really wanted to move or not, now that I have its too late to push the start date back.

It isn't good policy to do that to an Employer. They al will tell you that, but as you well know they'll give you the boot in a New York Second.
I would Call him and tell him your plans, and head for New York City if it benefits your, and your future. I personally do not know where Companies get the Idea that they alone are due advanced notices and employees are not due the same consideration. Don't sweat the job you have go for the gold.

All company officers knopw their time is usually limited at any given company(as CEO, or Manager)and they strive to increase theior earnings and retirement situation by continously looking and researching for the next better paying job. They can't expect you to not have the sanme chance.

i think if your company has been good to you leaving by slipping a note under his door is not a very nice thing to do. how would you feel if you were him.
also, if the job you are taking wants you badly they should be willing to wait a week or two so you can do the right thing. i am sure if you were working for them they would want you to do the right thing if you chose to leave them. it also should show them you have integrity and any good employer should appreciate that.
good luck

You need to find a cell phone and call him. Even at home. Don't ever burn bridges. If the NYC job really wanted you and was a professional company, they would understand that you need to give some sort of notice.

If you really want the job. Just be aware, new yorkers aren't up for a friendly chit chat. Some walk around and do stupid crap for no reason at all. One example is breaking your car window to throw garbage on your seat, and pour buckets of water on your head from their third floor apartment windows.

you should give your boss some form of advance notice. Common courtesy is you give your employer at least 90 days notice because that gives you time to collect any additional paychecks and to finalize your plans with your new job.

Maybe you can call him on the telephone or just go ahead and drop a letter in the mail. If you really want this job your offer then hopefully he will understand.

No! it is the most seriously overrated city in the world. It is grotty, grubby and the people are the rudest and most fake I have ever met.
