Unfortunately, my mom was the same way. She used to call me out of my name until at age 28 I put my foot down and told her if she ever wanted to see me or my son again to stop it. She stopped. Never did it again and I'm 44 now, but I have never forgotten how it feels to be treated like that.

It's sad. Now having my own child, I can't imagine ever saying anything demeaning or belittling to him, let alone call him outside of his name. To this day I have no idea why she did it other than jealously and a low self-esteem and a control freak.

Oh honey what a difficult question because as easy as it is for me to say you HAVE to step in ~ I understand that is easier said than done. But if you care about that li'l girl you must. Suck it up ( by which I mean the awkwardness of confrontation ) and spit it out, it is obvious u want to, so I suppose I would start sympathetically and try to hit home without offending her, like " Geez, is that how your mother talked to u?" Or perhaps, " Wow, that seems harsh, are u ok? do u not see how much that hurts her? " Maybe u could play a sort of Dr Phil and let her get out her anger so she doesn't relay it to her child. I see that verbal and physical abuse are almost always hand in hand. That little girl doesn't deserve to be sweared at. < period.

The mother obvioulsy doesn't understand the effect or harm she is causing. People carry their beliefs about themselves throughout their lives and these beliefs are taught by the parent.
Looks like somone will have a low self esteem because of reckless parenting. Sorry to hear that.

Whom is verbally abusing whom? It's hard to tell from your question.

If someone is being verbally abused, and you know the parties involved, notify the police or the child protective agencies.

Since you haven't given any details, it will be hard to tell you what to do.

you really need to talk to the child about it and promise her you wont say anything. One day if you hear something call the police and say it was suspicious and then boom she's caught. It's really the only way cuz a mom wont admit to something like that, unless it Dr. Phil.
