Got two beige Icelandic sheep skin rugs that have collected too much dirt and soot from hanging on the wall. Would like to wash them and leave them conditioned and not dry to become brittle.

You can't wash them at all. The wool is attached to the skin (leather). Once it gets wet, it will dry out siff and runpled like an old flattened kerosene can! There are specialty cleaners that do sheepskins. Ask your drycleaner. They may be able to do it, or can send it to someone who can.

I have a sheepskin rug that is about 4 sq ft. It has leather on the back side, it looked terrible, all matted and hard. I read posts that say to machine wash it gentle cycle. I used a woolite type detergent and when it was done I hung it up to dry. When it was almost dry I used a wire brush to brush it out and it looks GREAT! It smells great too! FYI
