I usually get 11 mbps the problem is that sometimes it falls to 1 and I lose connection. anything I can do to boost the signal?

You might look into hi gain wifi antennas.....

Build a cantenna (pringles can + other stuff, search it) or buy a WiMax booster. It's really easy to do.
I bought an old DishTV satellite and rigged it for wifi....I get signals 5 miles away =)
