Can there be a more insulting remark by someone coming back after a performance and telling me, the star of the piece, that "They should make a movie out of this"?

It is, perhaps, a condition of distribution not malice. If someone enjoyed your performance, it would be logical that they would want the whole world to share the experience. Live stage performances are limited in the multitudes they are able to reach; a movie, however has the capability to reach millions. Wouldn't you want to share your apparent acting skills with more than a few hundred folks? Don't let your ego keep you from achieving your true potential as a Thespian and a human being.
BTW: You don't state that the person disliked your performance; I fear, my dear that YOU reacted to an unspoken insult. You sound very creative but needy! Ah, the consummate stage player....don't worry, you will survive all the so-called strife and pursue each and every endeavor with temerity and grace to the delight of thousands some day!

Strife is the defining characteristic of endeavour. To see the need for a movie rather than appreciate the performance is an example of that one persons limits.

And their failure to recognize the endeavour.

He or she is NOT your real audience. You know who they are, and so do they. But they who sought the movie, do not. Concern yourself with them not. They do not matter.

You obviously need to get out and try to get over yourself. IF you were indeed an actor of any stature, you would have played the role of an understanding person and thanked the person for their compliment.

We do not strive for insults in our art. Nor, do we strive for compliments in our art. We strive for our art.
