Yes. You can actually encourage your babies to talk sooner by making faces at them and imitating their sounds. Even a month-old child can often get the idea of an imitating game. Our first child used to stick out his tongue whenever his Daddy did... and he was less than a month old at the time.
These little games turn into imitating sounds that parents are making... and that's how they get the idea to learn to talk.
But remember that not all children are the same. Some talk early, walk late... others talk late, walk early, some are early or late on both. Just give her time. Five months is really kind of early to make many sounds.

Babies that age, if they do say anything like mama or dada it's babbling, they're connecting consenants and vowels and experimenting with how they sound. She might say it before she starts talking or even soon but at that age they don't connect the words with meaning. Sometimes they do try to imitate the sounds you make though.

My 9 month old can't even say dada yet. You're child is only 5 months, they will start saying words when they are ready to.

Babbling will start in the next couple of month, but calling parents "mama" and "dada" doesn't start until around a year old.

Check out baby sign language books at ya local library. Its proven babys who learn sign language will talk sooner then babies who don't know sign language. Plus sign language is good in so many other ways such as it'll help her raise her IQ scores latter on in life. Alot of studies done on it. LOOK it up. I'm teaching it to my 2 and 1/2 month old. They say they don't sign back till 5 or 6 months but the sooner they learn the sign language the quicker they'll talk. GOOD LUCK!!

Let me tell you 5 months is not to early but there is nothing wrong if she is not talking. I have a friend in California that has a little boy. last time I saw him his son was a year and some months old. He was the smartest little boy that loves to smile but he just was not ready to talk. I am going to have to find a way to get in touch with him!!!

She is adorable let her b.Keep saying them and when she gets it she'll let ya know. Some kid pick up quicker and sometimes when they get it they dont stop there. It might take her a min.My son started saying things at aroung 5 or6 months. Now he's a year and I cant get him to shut up he talks n his sleep. So beware this around the age that they start.Look out between now and six months.Oh and she might only say one for now b/c my son started saying dada first.

Babies, as a rough guide, say their first words and take their first steps, at around 12 months. Some are a little earlier, some are a little later.
One thing to remember though, speech acquisition comes long before actual first words, so it is important to talk and sing to your baby even though they can't talk back.
Enjoy your baby!
