I have Norton and Spy Sweeper and neither one can get rid of it. It flashes in my start-up tray (?) and says "Critical System Error!". Everything that I've read refers you to more programs that cost money to remove it. Is there a less expensive way?

The virus can be removed with software provided at this link:
http://www.spywareremove.com/removeVirusBurst_Trojan.html

EDITED: forget the above.... I just checked it out and it's more baloney offers for scans that are "free" but you have to pay for the removal. Sorry my solution wasn't researched. Now that I had the same problem as you I had to find a proper solution. I simply did a "system restore" in XP and returned my software to an earlier date. It worked very well and I no longer have any of that virus-burst crap on my system.

Trojans come in various forms. Surfing is a good way to get them. Go to CNET. Anti spyware soldier or spyware doctor are both good. They are FREE also.

Download AVG Anti-Virus. It will help you find this virus and delete it. I know this because a friend of mine who is also an expert on computers instaled it on my computer.

I normally recommend trendmicro's free housecall scanner( http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp ) but according to their website they aren't aware of something called virus-burst, still it might be worth checking out ; otherwise symantec does provide removal instructions at their website : http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2006-090516-0204-99&tabid=3

uhhh, heres one thing to get rid of it, but a major risk. You formatted all your hard drives and start fresh, new data, empty files, EVERYTHING erased. But if you want to get rid of that virus without formatting, uhh update your Norton system.
