I'd just like to say for the record that Barbara Cartland is a really awful writer. It speaks badly of humanity that she's sold a billion books. (And yes, I know I'm a snob, but that doesn't make me any less right.)

According to her own website, the romantic novelist Barbara Cartland sold more than 1000 million copies of her books, of which there are several hundred, set in different historical periods and many parts of the world.
She sold so many books, in fact, that she was given the title of Dame of the British Empire by the Queen.
She died some years ago but her books are still selling. The reason she always gave for her success was that everyone likes to read about love.
