217 is approaching the upper range of "acceptable on a hot day with the A/C on".
Make sure your electric cooling fan is working.
I'd replace the the thermostat just for grins: it's a cheap job and cheap insurance!
Those engines are aluminum and can be destroyed by overheating!

That's warm. It should be around 190. Drain out the cooling system and fill it with water. If the water boils, you know the engine is getting too hot. Now it will gurgle a little when you come off the road, but only for a minute or two...getting hot, it will boil for 5 minutes. Might be a sticky thermostat. Good luck.

Most cooling fans do not come on till 228 degrees. 217 on a hot day at idle i would say normal. If you turn the a/c on, cooling fans should run all the time.

217 is ok, just make sure you are not loosing coolant, The Northstar has a lot of places that can leak, and they will blow a head gasket if they get low. If you do find a leak, write and tell us where you see it.
