I guess the best way to define a telenovela would be as a soap opera with a defined beginning, middle, and end. The story unfolds in hourlong episodes five days a week for a set number of weeks. When it's over, it's over, as opposed to American series which tend to run indefinitely (until they get cancelled or bow out after a long run).

I don't think they're any more popular now with Latinos than they have been before, but the big buzz lately is about how the telenovela format has been adopted by Americans for the Fox-owned MyNetworkTV network.

the are Spanish language soap operas, made mostly in Mexico. as for why they are popular, well you hardly ever see the Virgin of Guadalupe make a cameo appearance on All my Children or One Life to Live, but she's always appearing in to somebody's grandmother in a telenovela....
