The expiration date on medication is the latest date on which 100 percent strength is assured. The medication does not become useless on that date, but afterwards may reduce in effectiveness. One type of medication called Tetracyclines (Tetracycline, Doxycycline, Oxytetracycline, etc) are NOT to be taken after expiration due to the danger of dangerous side effects. I cannot, due to my profession, advise you to take expired medications, but I can tell you that I have done so.

Typically most meds are good for about 6 months or so after the expiration date, however it depends on the drug, Some lose thier eficacy meaning they are no longer useful, some can become toxic, It is safer to just throw stuff out if it has an expired date, your health is NOT worth it!

All medications have to have an expiration date by law, but that doesn't mean they are not going to help a little bit after that date...Just means the government got their hands on it to make more money from people...Also means you should replace them soon.

They start to lose their effectiveness after the expiration date. It's best to throw them out and start over with a new bottle.

How long medications last depend on the storage conditions. At controlled room temperature many medications will retain their potency for years. But there are some medications--like tetracycline--that become toxic if they are too old. If you have any questions about a particular medication please ask a pharmacist.
