For the next 48 hours:
Rest - Stay off it, sit down, get other people to do stuff for you.
Ice - Ice pack on for ten minutes, off for ten minutes - carry on until you get too bored, and forget.
Compression - put a bandage on it, but not so tight that it makes your toes go funny colours
Elevation - keep it up higher than the rest of your leg, put it on a pillow while you're lying on the couch.
and for 72 hours _avoid_ the following:
Heat - no hot baths, heat packs, Deep Heat etc - they make inflammation worse.
Alcohol - stay off the sauce it slows down the healing process, and getting drunk and falling over again isn't going to help either!
Running - just stay off it for the next two days as much as possible.
Massage - you don't want to encourage blood flow during this time, inflammation can cause more damage.

R - rest
I - ice it for the first 72 hours.
C - compression (as in with a tensor bandage or related item)
E - elevation (put it up on a stack of pillows)
DO NOT put it in a warm bath or use a heating pad for three days. This will cause the tissue to swell and will make it sorer. You may use a warm bath and epsom salts after the three day mark.
Hope you feel better soon!!

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.
So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.
Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.
A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

R.I.C.E
R = rest: try to rest it 24-48 hrs, start using/walking gradually and doing other activities but not to cause injury or make it to painful
I = Ice: ice the area for NO LONGER then 20 minutes at a time every couple of hours. Move the ice pack around to all parts of your ankle. (bag of frozen veggies works...you can mold the bag around the extremity) You can cause injury to the tissue if you ice it for longer then 20 minutes
C = Compress: self explanatory i suppose, ace wrap but not too tight to cut of circulation. you should easily be able to slip a finger inside the wrap.
E = elevate: raise your leg higher then the level of your heart to prevent or decrease swelling
Above all...see your doctor if its not feeling better in a day or two. it could be a more significant injury.

Elevate it up and dont walk on it. Wrap it with an ace wrap and take some Motrin or Tylenol. Remember the more you walk on it the long it will take to heal.
