It's designed to go on so that you will take it to the dealer and spend money to pay for the dealer's high overhead.
Ignore it, or just go to one independent mechanic after another until you find one who knows how to get it to turn off.
Getting cars worked on is just like getting a good computer repair shop: talk to enough of them and you will become an educated consumer and be able to tell who you want to work with and who you do *not* want to work with, who knows their stuff and who doesn't.
Hope this helps.

Find another mechanic. The check engine light is telling you that you have a sensor problem or a drivability problem.I bet the lite was not on when the car was new so what makes it OK now .Where do people thinking that a lite that comes on is ok.You morons should try reading about car check engine lites. When you ride in a new car do you see the check engine lite on?Just because the car runs ok does not mean its running at its peak performance. If you didn't need the check engine lite they would not have installed it in the car.Its like a gas gauge you don't need it either just keep driving it will be OK .The lite is warning you that you have a computer problem or a sensor that is out of it perimeter. If you live close to a advance auto parts or auto zone they will do free computer scans at no charge and will tell you whats wrong

I used to drive a 94 Grand Am and everytime I hit 50mph the check engine light came on and stayed on until I turned the car off. There was never anything actually wrong with the car, so I think you should be alright. Someone else w/ a grand am said their's occasionally came on too, so it's probably just a malfunction with the light!

Sometimes there is an electrical or computer error, which results in a warning light remaining on. I'd get a second opinion though. Call around and ask to see if there is a mechanic service with a free diagnostic service. If you ask, places that don't normally offer this, they may make an exception for you.

The light means the computer has detected a sensor value that is out of range.
There are many sensors on a car: some are more important than others.
If the light is on a trouble code is stored in the computer. Your mechanic should be able to tell you what code your car has, what it means, and why he thinks it is unimportant.

Go to AUTO ZONE and have it checked for codes, then let us know what they are. It may be ok, but that light isn't there just to look at, if it comes on there is something the matter somewhere.
