I know him mostly from covers of his songs, like "Hallelujah," "Chelsea Hotel," and "I Can't Forget." What album is the best? Is there a good greatest hits album?

The Essential Leonard Cohen (2002). It covers his work from the beginning through all but his last CD.

The Best of Leonard Cohen, released in 1975, has most of his important works on it.

my favorite is called "the future", released sometime late 80's or early 90's. it is a little dark, though. i believe that a best of vol 1 and vol 2 have been issued.
