If it takes a few seconds to go into gear and usually happens after the vehicle has been sitting a while ( a couple of hours or longer) and works fine after this, it could be that your filter is partially stopped up, seals in the transmission themselves are getting hard or that the pump in the transmission is going out. Have it serviced and see if that helps, if not you may be due for a transmission overhaul. Like whts said about though don't let them flush your transmission with a machine it can lead to future damage.

You may have a vacuume leak. I believe the trans mudulator valve runs off vacuume.
Or the trans filter is restricted.
Most people now a days get thier transmission flushed. It replaces all the fluid in your transmission, torque converter, the cooler the lines everything...But it doesn't include changing the filter. If it's the tranny making it hesitate these are probably The best 2 things to look for and do. Tranny filter and gasket replacement is very messy because the pan doesn't have a plug to drain the fluid. So when you drop the pan expect 5 to 6 quarts to spill out. the best way is to remove all but 2 of the pan bolts.loosen the 2 bolts alittle and pry on the pan.the 2 bolts by the way should be on one side of the pan. Better yet don't do it yourself let a shop worry about it.the service takes a skilled mechanic about15 to 30 mins to do.90 percent of people who own a car will still have the same filter in their car when they sell it as when they bought it.
And don't let a mechanic convince you that a flush back flushes the filter and you don't have to change it.

Just say a prayer and put the 15 year old horse out to pasture. Or rebuild or replace the transmission. Electronic controled transmissions are just now being sucessfully rebuilt by AAMCO and other trans builders. The current batch of new trucks make more power and get better gas mileage.
