I've been told that leather is better because synthetics tend to hold in the heat. Synthetics are a pretty close second though
Wintecs are a good brand- I myself don't recommend the Kencaides (sorry bout spelling), I found them to be poorly made and quite hard on the horses backs. I found them to rock back and forth on the horses back, which indicates an incorrect fit. They are also heavier than other english saddles.
If you want a saddle for everyday use- I'd suggest a Wintec All Purpose- like the other person said, with the changeable gullet and synthetic, they are easy to clean, and they sit well on any horse.
From there you can buy leather or synthetic saddles in dressage and jumping, all under the Wintec or Bates range. They've been around for a long time and have quite a good name. They also come with guarantees and warranties to ensure you get what you pay for.
You could also ask those at your local saddlery shop to let you know what their opinion is, from my knowledge the European made English saddles are very good- specifically Germany, but those tend to be quite pricey and I've never bought one as I don't show or event. See if you can trial them first to see how they feel. It's important for you and the horse to be comfortable.
Another suggestion- make sure you get the saddle fitted to your horse. Some saddlery shops provide this service, but you'll have to check. Having a saddle fitted to your horses frame allows you and your horse to work together more comfortably, a horse doesn't always let you know when the saddle doesn't fit, so it's better to be safe than sorry.
All the best- happy saddle hunting:)

We have got both kinds of saddles and it really depends on 1) who will be doing the saddeling of the horse, 2) the horse and 3) the riders comfort. We have one horse that we only use leather saddles on and we have one that due to his size the synthetic works better because it is lighter (he is 16.4 hh). Both have advantages and disadvantages to them and as others have said price is a big advantage as synthetic's are quite a bit cheaper than leather, but the leather saddles last a lot longer. I would say for a kid the synthetic until they are more comfortable carrying and lifting the saddle for an adult that is sure this is what they want invest in a good leather saddle, if you keep it cleaned and conditioned you will come closer to getting your money back than on the synthetic.

It depends upon how you're going to use it. If you want to go to shows, then you need to have a leather saddle. If you are going to use it a lot and don't want to have to worry about cleaning and oiling it, then try a synthetic saddle. Synthetic saddles are also very lightweight, though that's more applicable for western saddles since english saddles are all rather lightweight. If cost is a factor, leather saddles are more expensive. But really, it doesn't make a huge difference overall. I know that my synthetic western saddle tends to slide off to the side more than my leather western saddles do, but that might not be the same with english saddles.

Wintec makes a very nice synthetic A/P saddle. They are great. You can hose them off and you are done. No cleaning and conditioning. They are great and very well made.
Kincade also makes a nice synthetic.
The Wintec some models have the CAIR pannels in them and fit wonderfully on the horses back. THey also come with a changeable gullet and you can hcange the size very easily to fit many horses.
I really like the Wintec.
I have an older Collegiate Event Saddle and I like it very much I do not ride English all the time so I do not have to clean it all the time. If I spent more time in an English saddle I would have a synthetic one.

It really does depend, but the majority of people I know perfer leather including myself. I rode in a synthetic Wintec saddle for quite a while and I found canter is much more comfertable in a leather saddle! But I would also suggest buying a used leather saddle if your looking to buy a saddle, they tend to be more broken in and that much more comfortable!

I have a leather saddle and it does not rip as bad as my synthetic one, but my synthetic one weighs almost nothing while my leather weighs just a little bit more.

Your horse will thank you for leather, it breathes easier...western style is the best, and most comfortable in my eyes.
