Can anybody explain to me 'Algebra' in very simple terms. Please help.?

I'm not a math expert by any means. I had to be tutored through Intermediate algebra in college. But I do know that the letters are simply substitutes for numbers in a formula. The object is to find the numerical value of one of the letters. For instance. x = 2+2.
Obviously x = 4. 2+2=4. From that simple equation, the formulas gradually get more complicated, with more abstract formulas to solve. There are Cliff Notes on Algebra, and most colleges have tutorial services available. You might also check with eBay for books on beginning algebra. Beginning algebra is actually fun. I was glad to get through my Intermediate algebra in college with a B.

The easiest way to think of algebra is to imagine each letter is a box that can have a number stored in it. Like a cardboard box. The letter is just the label on the box. The number in the box may not be known so we use the letter to represent the box. When we are ready to convert it, we take the number out of the box and use it in place of it's letter.

When we add two letters together, we are adding the numbers in the boxes, the same goes for subtracting, multiplying etc.

imagine an equation where you dont know a number, for example

2+?=4

you and i know the ? is a 2. basically algebra replaces the ? with a letter that signifies the question mark. the reason its used is for more complicated equations where we dont know more than one number.

sometimes there are standard equations that work whenever you need to find something out. for example, time, distance and speed.... if you know 2 of them you can always work the other one out by using a standard equation. but the numbers will be different everytime. so by using letters, you know the equation to use and simply substitute the letters with the values you do know, to work out the values you dont know.
