I have recently discovered that someone is using my social security number in Texas and now I can not open up a checking account at a bank. I have recntly moved and now am nervous of the repercussions that this "stolen indentity" will cause. Please provide me with any information you know about this, a real life example would be nice to hear.

call the three credit agencies Equifax, Experian, TransUnion........file a police report which you might have to give to creditors later.....contact the Social Security Agency.....get your credit reports and start cleaning them up

good luck, its not the end of the world

You only need to contact one of the Credit Reporting Agencies, they will contact the other 2 for you. Also, you can have a Credit Alert put on your name and social security number, if anyone tries to open up new credit, the credit bureau will call you to make sure it was you opening up the new account. This happened to my mom and it takes a long time to settle everything. Good luck. I included a government website which will tell you exactly how to go about handling this.

Get copies of your credit history and report and look for any discrepencies. If you want pay to have your credit record monitored. First you want to file a police report so that law enforcement can build a reputable case and trail back to the last time you had to provide your social security number and start figuring out from there what to do next. I can recommend a good website and that's www.Freeannualcreditreport.com and you can get copies of your credit report from all 3 credit bureaus and you can look over it and see any discrepancies and correct it. I was a victim of identity theft and it's hurt my credit so bad I am barely getting my life back to getting a credit card and other financial assistance.
