Long story short...had a tech out that said my network card was bad but the thing is less than a year old. I am suspect since this guy wanted to use some sort of USB adapter to enable me to get online again. Why the heck would he not suggest a new network card if that was really the problem? Is there any way for me to check it on my own by looking on the computer? I was not there when the diagnosis was made...my mother-in-law was....ugh!
I tried my laptop on the connection and it did not work...perhaps a bad cable? THanks in advance

At the spot where the cord plugs into your computer there will be either a red, yellow, or green light showing. If the light is green, your card and cord are working. If not, you most likely need to replace the card or the cord. First, try a new cord that you know works.

You may also want to check to make sure your Ethernet Adapter is updated and working with your computer. Go to Start, Control Panel, System, go to the "Hardware" tab and click on the "Device Manager" button. Double click on "Network adapters" and see if the items listed have a yellow "!" next to them. If they do not, it is OK. If it does, you need to right-click the item and check the "Device Status". If it needs a new driver, download it from the manufacturer's website, then go to the "Driver" tab and click the "Update Driver" tab.

If the cord and card are not a problem, you need to check to see if your computer is trying to connect to the correct network. Open your browser (most likely Internet Explorer) and go to Tools Internet Options. Click on the "Connections" tab and make sure there is nothing in the white box below "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings." Remove anything that appears (especially AOL).

Firstly do a ping command, go to start type in cmd hit enter, then when the black window appears type in ping www.microsoft.com
this should give you a response telling you the time it took to reach the site. If you get a response, unable to reach site etc then you have no connections.
Check the back of the pc and make sure you have 2 lights above the network card, green and orange normally, if there are none, its either the cable or the card.
Replace the cable or try another good cable, if this fails there is a good chance the card is faulty. Go to control panel, system, look for hardware, check to see if the network card is installed correctly, re install the card drivers first if it has a yellow exclamation mark against the card.
If this all fails, buy a new network card and install it, most times its the card or the cable that fails. I would not bother with a usb card a normal 10/100mbs network card is fine for most users.

It could very well be the card is bad! These techs arent in the business of selling you nic cards! They work for the cable company and only diagnose trouble up to the modem. All he was trying to do is set you up using the usb connection to get you going! Just swapping your laptop with the other PC wont let you log on to the net! It has to be set up to connect. Now if you have a router that connects all your PCs to the internet, thats a different story! If none of them are able to connect, then you either have router probs, modem probs, or the ISP is down! If I were you, I would strongly suggest a router if you have more than one pc to begin with. If you need help in decisions, feel free to contact me!

Either net cables are pretty cheep.. you could try another one or go some place like best buy and have them look at your computer... also you can get a good NIC for $20-50 and so it is not like he was telling you to buy a new computer.

There are some laptops the position the ethernet socket is in reality a dummy, in which case you're knackered, you could ought to flow on the spot. flow to you Contro Panel > gadget > Hardware > gadget manager and examine what community card you've (if any), see if it operating wisely or if the drivers were put in. If there is no longer one you could ought to get a on the spot router and get an aerial on your laptop.

I can't exactly remember, but it's one of these two commands. The other one tests your operating system.

1) ping your IP address
2) ping 127.0.0.1

Long story short.. If you can ping both of these, then that means that your network card is working.
