A "Jedi Knight" is a science fictional character that Director George Lucas created for his "Star Wars Trilogy". The "Jedi" was supposedly based loosely on various warrior figures through out time...Knightsl like Sir Lancelot, Samurai warriors, Shogun warriors and the like. The Jedi Knights took either positions in the forces of Good (Obiwan Kenobi) or Evil (Darth Vadar) . Their universe, ruled by "The Force" is likened to Christianity's "Father, Son & Holy Ghost", Buddhism, Taoism and other world religions that offer polarized viewpoints (i.e. Good vs. Evil).

The Jedis are the warriors of peace and light. They are negotiators, but also well versed in hand-to-hand and weapon fighting, only when needed. Unlike the Empire, they ask questions first and strike later. The Jedi have a teaching based democratic system.

From Episodes I-III the system was (highest to lowest):

Jedi Council - 12 high ranking Jedi Masters, Master Yoda having ruling say

Jedi Masters - males and females who have completed their training and are allowed to take missions and students

Jedi Knights - males and females who have not quite completed their training, but are allowed to take missions and students

Padawan Learners - males and females from the age of 13 are taken by knights or masters to continue more advanced training and join them on missions

Initiates - males and females the age of 4-13 beginning their training to become Jedis

Between the ranks of Padawan to Knight and Knight to Master, the individual would be tested to prove their pureity to the Force and their unwavering loyalty to the Jedi, for example, Obi-Wan Kenboi was giving his Knighthood at the end of Episode I for not being tampted by the Dark Side of the Force to defate Darth Maul

After Episode VI, Luke Skywalker only had the teachings from Ben Kenobi, Yoda and knowledge he found around the galaxy to help him train a new generation of Jedi Knights and bestowed upon himself the rank of Jedi Master even having not passed the test to become one.

This is what I have come to believe the Jedi are and even if they are fiction their teachings and beliefs can be used in everyday life.

They're not a real religion !
They belive in balance between good and evil. A jedi must remain neutral until the situation dictates an act of violence. He must help thoes in need and sacrifice himself for the innocent.

a guy who fights using the universal bond of all creatures- in this case "the force". there are also multiple fighting techniques- Anikin's focuses more on strength, whereas Obi-Wan's technique concentrates more on defense and self-protection......... they also have an awesome laser sword that can cut through (almost) anything

(I'm not a star wars geek..... I'm just reading a star wars novel right now)
