I know that the insignia does not stand for Superman. In fact it might not even be an S. In the original film of Superman Marlon Brando and his cronies on the planet Krypton all had the same insignias on their tunics.

The S was on his costume before the "original" film was made... the De Laurentis family were just trying to be clever in implying that the symbol could be something else. The other people on Planet Krypton had different idylls, but using the same font and geometric structure there was a pantone and uniformity (no pun intended) of the symbols.

The S might also be a little tongue in cheek humour by the cartoonist Stan Lee... S for Stan!

Well, superman is sometimes known as "The Last SON of Krypton" so maybe the S stands for "Son Of Krypton", that could be why the others wore an S as they were all Sons of Krypton.

No they didn't actually. On Jor-El (Marlon Brando) had that symbol on his chest. The other Kryptonian "cronies" all had differnet symbols.
I believe that the symbol stood for Scientist, Which Jor-El was. Superman took on the symbol because it was on the blankets that the Kents found him wrapped up in.
