In the last few days my computer has,

Gone into standby mode while I was moving the mouse. But this time I was able to get it out in a few seconds after I hit the spacebar.

Then it went into standby mode while I was using it and I wasn't unable to get it out no matter what I hit. I then switched it off and back on and still no luck, so then I unplugged the monitor and tightened the conection to the videocard and still no luck. So then I shut the comp down for an hour and then it finally worked.

Then just now when I booted my comp it started without any icons on the screen. My mouse buttons wouldn't do anything but I was able to do crtl+alt+dlt and restart. (I don't know if this has anything to do with the standby thing or not)

I'm using retail WINDOWS XP Home on an AMD duron 1000.

Like MUff! said it's not a settings problem, I have it standby set to 20 minutes, but it came on when I was moving the mouse and was using the computer.

I am using full validated store bought windows XP home that is fully updated.

What I was mostly worried about was if it was any sort of sign that some piece of hardware was dying, but so far it doesn't sound like that.

I agree with others that you might be infected with a virus or other malware. Have you tried starting in safe mode? In safe mode, scan your computer with your antivirus program and quarantine any suspicous files. If you have anti-spyware programs, you should run them as well. If this fails to solve the problem then start in safe mode again and use system restore to rollback to a time before the problem started.

Another possibility is that your system is in dire need of a Windows reinstall. After some time, registry errors and obsolete files cripple Windows. Fred Langa, computer guru and writer for InformationWeek, wrote a great article on how to reinstall Windows while still keeping your important files. You can find the article at:

"Langa Letter: XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option

Fred Langa shows you how to completely rebuild, repair, or refresh an existing XP installation without losing data, and without having to reinstall user software, reformat, or otherwise destructively alter the setup. #1. There's no way it's just a settings problem with Standby mode...Because as you stated you are using the computer while this is happening...this doesn't happen with either standby, or sleepmode if you're using the computer...Only after it's been inactive for a period of time...
Whatever the problem is, it's in your Registry...You can try and fix it using Registry Mechanic (you have to pay for it) But, I don't even think that's going to do the trick...
The other is to do a complete Virus scan in "Safemode" and see if it comes up with anything...Make sure to turn off Systems restore before scanning because Viruses and Trojans store themselves in systems restore so on the next bootup they reinstall...
You more than likely will have to reinstall windows all over again...Yea I know it's a pain, but it's one sure fix to fix it right!
I had to install windows 4 times before it installed correctly...and yes it was XP Home...

sounds like a hardware situation, sorry uncertain what to point different than take it to a shop for restoration if not do not positioned it in standby, you would be reducing your carbon footprint aswell

Go to window site (Microsoft) and get validation of your window operating system and sign up for a auto update program.

I don't know,if it was just stand by mode I would say disable stand by , but when you say you lost icons sound like virus ,scan your computer. to find out.
