What exactly did the great tsunami wave happen, How big was it, and How long were the people stranded before help came?

An undersea earthquake was the initial cause. The wave it caused was very small mid ocean but as the bottom shallowed out it caused the sea to rise up - just the kind of thing that surfers like but HUGE.

This tsunami swept through Indonesia and Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004. It was caused by a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. It was the deadliest in recorded history. Go here for lots more information:
