This little question is not from "the" Mensa test, of course, which is supervised and lasts roughly an hour in total. These are sort of "brain teasers" just for fun, really, to let people realize that they might well qualify even though they had not imagined themselves to be brilliant. Two percent of the population is a good sized segment!
The story is told that a former President went into near panic when an advisor informed him that half the population placed below average (and the situation remains unchanged ... how dreadful!)
This little question is slightly ambiguous because one might group things in different ways and make a decent case for it, but at the same time, as many stated, you've got two tools that separate things and three things that join. You're looking for the most general answer that makes sense ... and after all, the question stresses meanings as the key criteria. Without that added bit, one might pull out the two four-letter words or the two that begin with "s". Quite a few bright people will look at this sort of thing from an unusual point of view and not come up with the "standard" answer ... hopefully not doing that on fifty different questions and getting a score like minus 15 ;) Most of the online tests are not very reliable because the testing conditions are not standardized, the "ceiling" is rather low, and the necessary work and item verification is less than adequate. It's not worth paying even a dollar for, except for the entertainment value.

Glue and string are the odd words - the other three are metallic objects.
But what's the point of soliciting responses for the Mensa test? That just makes a mockery of the whole thing. If the Yahoo! participants tell you the correct answers, all you are going to do is find the Mensa score of the Yahoo! participants, not your own Mensa score. And beleive me, if you get in through the back door, you'll be sorry! Mensa members love to challenge one another. If you don't belong, they're certainly going to find out -- and you can't stop in the middle of a conversation to check on e-mail and find out what the heck they are talking about....

Glue, nail and string are means of holding something in place,
thus buzz saw and sieve do not belong. Why try to use
another's thoughts for your validation? You don't need to
belong to Mensa to be bright or for your thoughts to be
worthwhile.

Just hazarding a guess, but: (b) sieve and (c) buzz saw do not belong because those two objects cannot bind an object or objects... for example, glue can bind paper, a nail can bind boards, etc.
But a sieve and a buzz saw can only separate...

i do not understand the Mensa try specially, yet right here's the reasoning behind the IQ score: at the same time as psychologists first began to locate techniques of measuring intelligence in toddlers (from time to time on the price of understanding it!) they accrued a lot of records about what the classic baby would elect with the intention to do at each and each age. Then they created the Intelligence Quotient, which changed into defined as psychological Age divided through Chronological Age x 100. So a baby of 10 who done initiatives that a 12-3 hundred and sixty 5 days-previous would income will be assigned an IQ of one hundred twenty - 12/10 x 100; a baby of 10 who executed the point of an 8-3 hundred and sixty 5 days-previous will be assigned an IQ of 80, and so on. contained in the early days of this variety of analysis particular disciplines were said that were left behind for the reason that then. as an celebration, the make sure changed into no longer meant to be calculated for anybody over the age of 16 or thereabouts because the theory of 'psychological age' ceases to carry water after this aspect; also if the ratio for any particular baby changed into more beneficial than 100 thirty 5 it would only be suggested as 100 thirty 5+ ... as hostile to three of the costs you spot those days the position X is suggested to have an IQ of 188, or inspite of. So, it type of feels a danger-free assumption that Mensa has taken 100 as regularly happening, and for this reason your score of 128 signifies that you do to boot as or extra ideal than type of 80% of the inhabitants. in spite of the indisputable fact that, would I make a lifelike aspect about reading ratings like this? because you could imagine of them as providing you with a ceiling above that you'll no longer upward push, or a floor lower than that you do not have any excuse for falling, and questioning about them as flooring somewhat than ceilings is a lot extra lifelike and a lot less likely to effect in problems with shallowness. Or, to placed it yet in a unique way, you should work out this score as that signifies that you'll by no skill do any extra ideal than 80% of the inhabitants or as that signifies that you do not have any excuse for doing any worse than 80% of the inhabitants, and the 2d view is a lot extra functional. it really is mandatory that oldsters bear this in ideas in the experience that they are given their children' IQs, or that persons recruiting for jobs use intelligence tests as a approach for sorting human beings.
