You can either be within a certain distance from a person, or you can use the INTERNAL (in the DS) wifi card at a wifi area. As for the friend code, you need to know someone who plays the game also to get that in order to visit other towns.

Wi-Fi means wireless fidelity. You don't need a cord because it's wireless. Places like starbucks, jamba juice, etc. have WiFi for their customers. If you have a wireless network at home, that also a WiFi.

WiFi is wireless. You get your own friend code the first time you connect to WFC. If you do not have a wireless router, you will have to find a Wi-Fi hotspot (e.g. a cafe).
