Yes, as mentioned you will need a network card with drivers for Windows 95 or whatever your 486 is running. You should run the network setup wizard on your Windows XP machine and have it create a floppy to run the network setup wizard on the 486 as well.

FYI I tested Ubuntu Linux quite thoroughly and I can assure you, it is slower than Windows XP. I hate people who lie in an attempt to convince people to use Linux.

Windows 95 and 98 have networking components, so yes.

yes.

I network my 74 Linux systems, with two XP clunkers, and, 4 Macs.

Wifi, and a laser printer, also... The XP clunkers are an AMD XP2.0 and a Compaq Presario. Normally quite competent, they slow to a crawl under the onerous drudge that is Microsoft. Linux runs 50X faster on them, and it is a deplorable situation to see them abused.

But, it is fun to watch the users give up and happily move to Linux! http://pclinuxos.com

You have to add Ethernet card to it and it will be working VERY VERY VERY slow. 486 I paid $2600.00 for it in 1990 and I try to give it to some one he did not take it.he said it is obsolete.
