My Dad was one of the GI's in the 29th Division who landed on the beach in France on D-Day. He always told me that the D stood for the actual day the invasion was scheduled to happen. Up to that point, it had been, D -3, D - 2, D-1, meaning three days to landing, two days to landing, etc. I don't know if there is any other meaning for the letter D.
